EnergyCAP, Inc. - Meet the Staff

Steven D. Heinz, PE, CEM, CEO

Steve is the Chief Executive Officer and founder of EnergyCAP, Inc. Steve has thirty-five years of professional experience in energy accounting and engineering.  He designed and supervised the development, testing, publication and support of EnergyCAP Enterprise, EnergyCAP Professional and FASER Energy Accounting.  Since 1980, these products have provided sophisticated energy accounting and analysis for more accounts, meters, buildings and clients than any other energy tracking system or service.

Highlights of Steve’s experience prior to forming EnergyCAP, Inc. include:

VP of Enron Energy Services; CEO and founder of Omnicomp, Inc., which he developed into the industry leader in energy information software; creator and author of FASER Energy Accounting software; CEO of Comprehensive Design Architects/Engineers (energy management analysis and architectural engineering design); Civil Engineering Officer in the U.S. Air Force.

Steve serves on the boards of several organizations including: International Students, Inc., a worldwide Christian ministry to international students; ServiceU Corporation, a web-based leader in ticketing, event registration and calendaring; and Calvary Baptist Church.

Steve received his Master of Science in Architectural Engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1980, and his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO in 1976, where he was the top graduate in Civil Engineering.  He’s a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania and an AEE Certified Energy Manager.

 

Software Engineering -- Design, Programming and Development

 

Ryan Booz, Chief Information Officer

Ryan is the Chief Information Officer for EnergyCAP, Inc.  He directs the EnergyCAP development team, has been the lead developer of the read-only EnergyCAP OnLine and oversees the integration of the Windows client with the upcoming web-based application, which is code-named Naioth.   He also administers network and computer systems within EnergyCAP, Inc., and oversees internal operations. 

Highlights of Ryan’s experience prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc. include: IT Trainer and System Administrator for Penn State University; Private Technology Consultant for over ten years.
 
Ryan received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Penn State University in 1998.
In addition to working at EnergyCAP, Inc., he enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter at home (and outside any chance they get), listening to and playing music, working on his house and spending time with friends.

 

Andrew P. Hitchings, Senior Project Manager - Software Development

Andy is the most Senior Programmer for EnergyCAP, Inc.  He has over twenty years experience in software engineering including leading the development of the EnergyCAP Professional and Enterprise programs. He is responsible for all of the powerful cost avoidance functions as well as pioneering the A/P interface process.

Highlights of Andy's experience prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc. include:

Development Team Leader of FASER Energy Accounting, for Omnicomp, Inc. and Enron Energy Services; Systems Analyst for Logical Alternatives, Inc; Manufacturing Engineer for Koppers. 

Andy received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Penn State University in 1984.  During his free time he enjoys running, biking, weight lifting, volleyball, karate and horseback riding. In addition he has enjoyed being an assistant Pee Wee football coach and giving free riding lessons to local children and of course spending time with his kids.

 

Timothy J. Marte, Senior Project Manager - Software Development

Tim is a Senior Programmer for EnergyCAP, Inc., specializing in database functions, FASER conversions, electronic import and reports interface.  He has over fifteen (15) years of professional experience in the fields of energy accounting and computer programming.

Highlights of Tim’s experience prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc. include:

FASER Programmer for Omnicomp, Inc and Enron Energy Solutions; software developer for Centroid Corporation, a company specializing in motion control systems and robotics; Information Resource Specialist for Veteran’s Administration.

Tim received his Master of Science Degree from Slippery Rock University in 1991, where he graduated Cum Laude.  He enjoys going for walks, reading and spending time with his wife and two daughters.

 

Samata P. Karoor, Senior Project Manager - Software Development

Sam is a Senior Programmer for EnergyCAP, Inc.  A member of the development team for EnergyCAP, she focuses on Greenhouse Gas tracking, PowerViews, Custom Spreadsheets, benchmarking and related aspects of the user interface.  She also maintains the software build process.

Sam has over ten years of professional experience in the fields of energy accounting and computer programming.

Highlights of Sam’s experience prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc. include:

Research Assistant for Penn State University’s Energy Institute; Product Engineer at Lomic, Inc; Software Executive at Siemens Public Communication Network Ltd., in Bangalore, India.

Sam received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Mysore in Mysore, India in 1995.  She loves to spend time with her husband and daughter and also enjoys gardening, traveling, photography and cooking.

 

Christian Smith, Business Intelligence Manager

Christian is the Business Intelligence Manager for EnergyCAP, Inc., where he oversees data presentment in EnergyCAP Enterprise.  Previously, Christian was the primary EnergyCAP Enterprise support technician.

Highlights to Christian’s experience prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc. include:

Technical Manager at Nittany Notes, where he served as technical trainer, webmaster, technical writer, and database designer.

Christian received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Penn State University in 2003.  He enjoys outdoor activities, sports and spending time with his family and friends.

 

Adam C. Hegedus, Senior Project Manager – Software Development

Adam is the lead developer for the new web-native version of EnergyCAP, as well as the product manager for GreenQuest.

Mr. Hegedus has ten years of experience managing projects from small scale to multi-million dollar deployments of hardware and software as well as writing web-based applications for audiences around the world.

Adam received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Penn State University in 1997.  He is a worship leader with his church, and in his free time, enjoys mountain biking, hiking, and spending as much time as possible with his lovely wife and two daughters.

 

AJ Kertis, Project Specialist

AJ assists the Chief Information Officer of EnergyCAP, Inc. with various IT-related tasks including network administration, website maintenance, server configuration and internal IT support.

In addition to working full-time at EnergyCAP, Inc., AJ is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Sciences and Technology at Penn State University.

Before joining EnergyCAP, Inc., AJ was a systems administrator at Penn State. When not at school or work, AJ enjoys spending time with his girlfriend and family and playing guitar.

 

Brian J. Hoffman, Web Developer

Brian is a Web Developer for EnergyCAP, Inc., where he develops internal corporate web applications and manages the technical side of EnergyCAP, Inc.'s public websites.

Prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc., Brian was an Interface Designer for Minitab, Inc. and a Lead Programmer for Penn State University.

Brian earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Penn State University. He also attended professional training programs from Sun Microsystems, The Walt Disney Company, and Lockheed Martin Corporation.

Brian is married and has one daughter. In his free time he spends time with his family and his church. He also bikes with the Christian Motorcycle Association and enjoys photography and home improvement.

 

Technical Services -- Client Implementation and Support


Ryan T. Ohlson, Director of Technical Services

Ryan is the Director of Technical Services for EnergyCAP, Inc., where he directs technical support and multi-phase EnergyCAP system implementations.  He holds several Project Management certificates from Penn State.

Highlights of Ryan’s experience prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc. include:

Systems Design Specialist for the Applied Research Lab at Penn State University, where he managed several large-scale systems integration projects; Information Management Intern for GE Aircraft Engines, where he worked in the Quality Management department.  

Ryan received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Penn State University in 2002.  He volunteers with his church’s youth group and enjoys playing sports of various kinds.  He is married and has two young daughters.

 

John M. Pierce, CEM, Senior Project Manager – Software Implementation

John is the most senior Implementation Project Manager at EnergyCAP, Inc.  He has over fifteen (15) years of professional experience in the areas of energy accounting, creation and installation of client databases, client training, Quality Assurance testing and Product Development, and creation and management of implementation projects.

Highlights of John’s experience prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc. include:

Director of Customer Support for EnergyWatchdog/Utilivision, Inc. where he directed the implementation of client datasets to track and analyze utility bills using a web-based Energy Accounting ASP; FASER Project Manager for Enron Energy Information Solutions, where he managed the creation of FASER datasets for municipalities, national corporations, universities, hospitals and school districts; and FASER Project Manager for Omnicomp, Inc. where he performed FASER calculations, audited over 1800 client utility accounts each month, trained clients and managed the creation and implementation of over 75 FASER datasets to track and analyze client utility bills.

John is a member of the Association of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), is a Certified Energy Manager (#004403) and a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional.  He received his Master of Science Degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1993 and his Bachelor of Science from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1990.  

John enjoys playing ice hockey, karate, watching ice hockey (GO BRUINS!), and is the drummer for his church’s Praise Band.  He also enjoys coaching his son and daughter in baseball and soccer, and spending time with his family, especially at the beach in Gloucester, MA.

 

Mark Amberman,  Project Manager – Software Implementation

Mark is an Implementation Project Manager for EnergyCAP, Inc.

Highlights of Mark’s experience prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc. include:

Various information technology roles for UPS consisting of training, project roll-out, and software implementations for internal and external UPS customers over a seven-year period.

Mark has an Associate Degree from a technical institute in Phoenix, Arizona, and he is currently pursuing his Bachelors of Science in Business Logistics from Smeal Business College at The Pennsylvania State University.  Mark also has several technical certifications.

When not working or in class, Mark enjoys water skiing, downhill skiing, tinkering with cars and motorcycles, and any other outdoor activity.

 

Scott Bair,  Project Manager – Software Implementation

Scott is an Implementation Project Manager for EnergyCAP, Inc.  In addition, Scott oversees the Greenhouse Gas Tracking module and ENERGY STAR interface. 

Highlights of Scott’s experience prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc. include: 

Environmental Engineer at Blazosky Associates, Inc, where he authored annual emissions reports, conducted site assessments, developed erosion control and stormwater management plans and designed landfill components.  He also served as a machinist mate onboard the USS SAN JUAN, a fast attack nuclear submarine sailing out of Groton, Connecticut. 

Scott received his Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Systems Engineering from Penn State University in 2001, and is pursuing his Master of Science Degree in Geo-Environmental Engineering.  In addition to working at EnergyCAP, Inc., Scott enjoys watching and playing a variety of sports, but his two favorite are golf and basketball.  Scott and his wife, Julie, treasure playtime with their two children and two golden retrievers.

 

Andy Harbison, Project Manager – Software Implementation

Andy is an Implementation Project Manager for EnergyCAP, Inc.

Highlights of Andy’s experience prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc. include:

An accomplished manufacturing manager with a diverse background in information systems, MRP/ERP implementations, and Industrial Engineering. He has served as the Director of Manufacturing & Finance, The Ultran Group, where he oversaw finance, administrative, and materials functions for the Company. Additionally, he held senior level positions with Spectrumedix, LLC (Vice President of Manufacturing), FCI Electronics, Inc (Senior Industrial Engineer/Global Product Coordinator), North American Refractories Company (Production Planning Manager), and Raytheon Systems Company (Advanced Engineer). Andy also served in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Dix, New Jersey.

Andy received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University. He also served as the President of the Central Penn Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers.

In addition to working at EnergyCAP, Inc., Andy serves on the Board of the Salvation Army, and is an active musician in the Central Pennsylvania area. Andy plays on the Worship team at his church, as well as jazz and R&B/rock groups in the area.

 
Paul Hester, Project Manager – Software Implementation

Paul is an Implementation Project Manager for EnergyCAP, Inc.

Paul was employed as an Exploration Cartographer for Standard Oil when he discovered computers in 1983. Since then, he has had a rich and varied career within the computer industry working for manufacturers to deploy new technology within the U.S. and abroad.

Highlights of that experience include:

Implementation Engineer and Project Manager for Intergraph (twice), OEM/Strategic Business Development for Seagate Software (Backup Exec), Consultant for Enterprise-wide Data Solution Product Marketing to Dawn Technologies for all of Australia, New Zealand and parts of Asia, Senior Sales Support for Strategic Management Group and Executive V.P. for Fisk Internet Services. He has also worked closely with the product development groups of several major hardware and software manufacturers, including Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Exabyte, to introduce new technology initiatives for Data Storage, Protection, Access and Management solutions.

Paul attended Penn State University prior to receiving a scholarship to attend the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He (along with his dog, Mandu) can often be found in his workshop steam-bending wood or working metal into new forms, sometimes with advance knowledge of the end result. He also enjoys hiking and biking the expanse of mountain trails unique to Central Pennsylvania.


Joel H. Brickell, Manager of Technical Support

Joel is the Manager of Technical Support for EnergyCAP, Inc., where he handles the first line of technical support of EnergyCAP Enterprise and Professional versions.

Prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc., Joel was an Information Technology Specialist for the Applied Research Lab at Penn State University. He was also a police officer in both Maryland & Virginia.

Joel earned his Associates Degree in Applied Computer Science from Penn Foster College, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He also attended Culinary School in Washington, D.C. In his free time Joel volunteers with the Special Olympics and the Salvation Army. He is married and has two daughters and one son. Joel enjoys motorcycling with his wife and coaching his son’s football team.

 

Tina N. White, Technical Support Specialist

Tina is a Technical Support Specialist for EnergyCAP, Inc., where she provides technical support to EnergyCAP Enterprise and Professional users.

Prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc., Tina was a programmer for Market Insight, where she created web surveys and verified data for accuracy; and a software engineer for Capital Blue Cross, where she managed customer support projects and performed quality assurance testing. As a United States Army reservist, Tina also served in the Gulf War, where she was responsible for the computerized supply system.

Tina earned her Associates Degree in Specialized Technology from South Hills Business School in State College, PA. She has also completed certificates in: Effective Software Testing; Data Transformation Services (SQL Server); and Advanced Crystal Reports. In addition to spending time with her family, Tina enjoys a number of outside activities including: hunting, fishing, camping, racing, and watching sports. She also plays Fantasy Football and shops for antiques. Tina and her family also support a local dog rescue by raising money and fostering dogs when needed.

 

Sonia Felker, Administrative Assistant

Sonia is an Administrative Assistant for EnergyCAP, Inc., where she supports the Technical Services Department.

Prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc., Sonia was the Administrator for Penns Valley Community Church. She also supervised the Merrill Lynch Service Network and resolved high net worth clients’ questions for the Denver Services Group.

Sonia earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix in Denver, CO. She enjoys spending time with her husband, their two sons and their dogs. As a family, they enjoy all sports, especially college football, camping, canoeing, exploring the woods around their home and entertaining friends and family. In Sonia’s quiet time she likes to read, create paper crafts, garden and bird watch.

 

Kurt Kroeker, Systems Integration Engineer

Kurt is the Systems Integration Engineer for EnergyCAP, Inc., where he performs various IT-related projects for the Director of Technical Services; including custom software development, data analysis, and business intelligence reports.


He graduated in the spring of 2009 from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science in Information Sciences and Technology (IST) with a focus on Information Systems Integration. His professional interests include Microsoft Visual Basic.NET and web development in PHP and ASP.NET.

Prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc., Kurt was a part-time web developer for the Solutions Institute at Penn State’s College of IST. He joined EnergyCAP, Inc. part-time as an IT Developer/Technician in April 2008 during his junior year in college, and moved to his current position in June 2009 upon his graduation.

Outside work, Kurt enjoys a variety of hobbies which include spending time with his fiancée, playing tennis, reading historical and theological literature, and playing any of several bluegrass instruments.

 

Marketing and Sales

 

Chris S. Heinz, Director of Marketing

Chris is the Marketing Director for EnergyCAP, Inc., where he directs marketing efforts.

Highlights of Chris’ experience prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc. include:

Customer Service Representative for SurfControl,Inc., where he supported customers and the sales department for its software product; Sales Associate for Nordstrom, where he sold high-end clothing in the Men’s Department.

He serves on the boards of Harvest Breakthrough Network, which is an international ministry organization and the Phoebe Foundation, which helps widows and orphans in Sri Lanka.

Chris received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI in 2000.  He enjoys working out, reading, writing, traveling and spending time with his family.  He also likes to buy books and sometimes reads them.  Chris is a member of the American Marketing Association (AMA).

 

Barry Kroeker, Media & Documentation Manager

Barry is Media & Documentation Manager for EnergyCAP, Inc., where he produces media presentations to support company initiatives as well as technical documentation to support users. He has more than two decades of experience in communications, including eight years of university teaching at Penn State University.

Prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc., he managed user and marketing documentation for CANNON Instrument Company, a scientific manufacturer. While working full-time for CANNON, Barry completed a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from Regent University. He has a Bachelor in Music degree from Wheaton College (IL) and a Master’s degree in Music from the Hartt School of Music (University of Hartford).

His career in music included two years of professional performance with the South Dakota Symphony and the Dakota Wind Quintet. He currently performs as principle oboist with the Nittany Valley Symphony.Barry serves on the board of directors for the Nittany Valley Symphony as orchestra representative. He teaches Sunday School at Faith Baptist Church, where he has been elected church treasurer. Barry and his wife have five children. His hobbies include chess, reading, volleyball, tennis and racquetball.

 

Sharon Myers, Search Engine Specialist & Administrative Assistant

Sharon serves as a search engine specialist and administrative assistant to the marketing department at EnergyCAP, Inc.. She specializes in optimizing the company’s placement on search engines and manages online pay-per-click advertising campaigns. Sharon also provides administrative support for marketing campaigns and promotions.

Prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc., she was a stay-at-home mom with two children. In addition, she has over nine years of experience teaching and tutoring. Her teaching expertise is in SAT preparation and writing. Sharon received her BA in English from Muhlenberg College and her Master's in Education from Penn State.

She enjoys going hiking with her family (including the canine family members), yoga, writing and singing.


John C. Heinz, Director of Sales

John is the Director of Sales for EnergyCAP, Inc.  He manages all EnergyCAP Enterprise direct sales as well as our programs for Channel Partners and Consultants.

John earned both Masters of Business Administration and Masters of Science in Management Degrees from the University of Denver (Denver, CO) and received his Bachelor of Arts from Calvin College (Grand Rapids, MI).  Prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc. he was a Corporate Event Sales Representative for the Colorado Rockies major league baseball club.   

John enjoys spending time with his wife and cat and is an avid sports enthusiast.

 

Blaine Clapper, Sales Manager

Blaine is a Sales Manager for EnergyCAP, Inc. He manages sales of EnergyCAP and GreenQuest.

Highlights of Blaine’s education and experience prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc. include the following:

Blaine earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing from The Pennsylvania State University in 1988 and a Masters of Business Administration Degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1997.

Blaine worked for OmniComp, Inc., the developer of EnergyCAP’s predecessor, FASER, from 1993 to 1999, where he held multiple roles, including Sales & Marketing Manager and Director of Business Operations.

Interests include weightlifting, running, hiking, and spending time with his family, in addition to being an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. For the past four years, Blaine has been a fundraising captain for the local YMCA’s “Strong Kids” campaign, and he has also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Toys for Tots, and other local non-profit organizations.

 

G. Adam Wetzel, Account Manager

Adam is an Account Manager for EnergyCAP, Inc.  He sells EnergyCAP Enterprise licenses, services and maintenance agreements to new customers and promotes organizational sponsorships of GreenQuest.

Prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc., Adam worked in the Engineering Department for the Norfolk Southern Railroad Corporation.  Adam earned a Masters of Business Administration Degree from the University of Denver (Denver, CO) and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing from Penn State University (State College, PA).

Adam enjoys spending time with his dogs Roxy and Luke, keeping fit, playing guitar and is fanatical about Penn State and Philadelphia sports.

Administration and Customer Service

 


Matthew S. Heinz, Director of Customer Service & Corporate Social Responsibility

Matthew is the Director of Customer Service & Corporate Social Responsibility. He serves customers by overseeing fulfillment of new orders, license validations, product upgrades, and customer communications. In addition, Matthew oversees EnergyCAP, Inc.'s charitable giving. He also promotes the Small Business Chaplain Initiative and other socially responsible projects. He directs Global Capacity, a non-profit organization started and mainly funded by EnergyCAP, Inc., whose goal is improving the quality of life in developing communities through self-sustainable agriculture, education and business initiatives. He is currently developing the Right 2 School program, which is a program that provides financial scholarships for secondary school students in Rwanda.

Previously, Matthew was the Director of Administration for EnergyCAP, Inc.. Before that, his experience included:

Fundraising for a non-profit organization, support staff at Bethel College, teaching assistant at Fuller Seminary, and program counselor for developmentally disabled adults.

Matthew received his Masters Degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA in 2003 and his Bachelor of Arts from Bethel College in St. Paul, MN in 1999. He is currently involved with the Umuryango Boys’ Home, a home for streetchildren in Rwanda. He helped to implement and maintain child and staff sponsorship programs at the Home. Matthew enjoys spending time with his family and friends, traveling, playing games, and entertaining.

 

Jonathan Hetler, Director of Administration & Human Resources

Jonathan is the Director of Administration & Human Resources for EnergyCAP, Inc., where he oversees Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable, manages the company headquarters, and leads the Human Resources department. In addition, Jonathan is also the Director of U.S. Operations for Global Capacity, EnergyCAP, Inc.'s non-profit organization.


Prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc., Jonathan was a manager for Gap Inc., where he focused on Human Resources and employee development. Before that he worked on process improvement also for the Gap.

Jonathan earned his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Regent University with a concentration in Organizational Change and Development and his diploma from Elim Bible Institute in Biblical Studies and Youth Ministry.

Jonathan enjoys spending time with friends whether that is having coffee, watching a movie, playing cards, or traveling about on vacations near and far.


Carrie Hegedus, Accounting Specialist

Carrie serves as an accounting specialist for EnergyCAP, Inc., where she performs a variety of tasks related to accounts receivable.

Prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc., Carrie was a stay-at-home mom for three years. Before that she worked as a technologist in the Nutrition Department at Penn State University.

Carrie received her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Penn State. She enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, reading, walking, crocheting and being with her mommy friends.


Lisa Thompson-Hess, Administrative Assistant

Lisa is an administrative assistant in the Administration and Customer Service departments at EnergyCAP, Inc., where she assists with invoicing, product fulfillment, data entry, front desk reception, and performs other administrative tasks.

Prior to joining EnergyCAP, Inc., Lisa served in administrative, customer service, marketing, and management positions at accounting, human services, and retail establishments. Lisa earned her Associate’s Degree in Specialized Business from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where she graduated with high honors.

Lisa devotes most of her time to her twin teenage sons, attending their sporting events and supporting their rock band. She also enjoys watching movies, traveling, walking, cooking, entertaining, shopping and making jewelry. In addition to her twin sons, she also spends time with her dogs.


Vic King, Company Chaplain


Vic is the part-time Company Chaplain for EnergyCAP, Inc. Vic is a licensed counselor and staff pastor for Calvary Baptist Church in State College, PA. He also works part-time at Penn State in Alumni Career Counseling. Vic and his wife Kay moved here from San Antonio, Texas in May 2007. He enjoys writing, carpentry, horses, hanging out in the garden, and riding down a bike trail with Kay.
