EnergyCAP CEO Steve Heinz suggests that future legislation may provide the impetus for information sharing between utility companies and apartment building owners that will provide a complete picture of tenant energy usage. This information could eventually provide the basis for an ENERGY STAR-type rating for an apartment complex or even individual submetered units within it.
The value of such an up-front rating is that potential tenants can more accurately anticipate energy expenses associated with a rental property. And multi-family property owners have a tool to assist them in energy analysis and capital improvements.
