An Energy Efficiency Rating for Multi-Family Units: How Can We Get There?

A recent interview published in PropertyManagementInsider explores the challenges of developing and implementing energy efficiency ratings for rental units.

EnergyCAP CEO Steve Heinz suggests that future legislation may provide the impetus for information sharing between utility companies and apartment building owners that will provide a complete picture of tenant energy usage. This information could eventually provide the basis for an ENERGY STAR-type rating for an apartment complex or even individual submetered units within it.

The value of such an up-front rating is that potential tenants can more accurately anticipate energy expenses associated with a rental property. And multi-family property owners have a tool to assist them in energy analysis and capital improvements.
